How to Prepare Your Motorcycle for Transport

Having a motorcycle collected does not require much preparation, but a few simple checks before collection can make the process easier for everyone involved.

Whether you've bought a motorcycle privately, are moving it between addresses, sending it to a dealer or workshop, or arranging transport for another reason, the most useful thing you can do is make sure the motorcycle's condition and the collection arrangements are clear before the van arrives.

This guide covers what Ark Road Recovery needs to know before collection and the things worth checking to make the day run smoothly.

1. Tell us the motorcycle's condition

The most important information is what the motorcycle is actually like when it is collected.

Tell us:

  • Whether it starts
  • Whether it rolls freely
  • Whether the wheels move normally
  • Any known faults or mechanical problems
  • Any existing damage that could affect how the motorcycle is moved
  • Anything that is seized, damaged or otherwise difficult to move

A motorcycle that will not start is not necessarily a problem. If it rolls, it can be moved using the winch. If it cannot roll, a skate can be positioned underneath the wheels using a small jack so that the motorcycle can still be loaded.

The important thing is that we know the condition beforehand so we can arrive with the appropriate equipment.

2. Have the keys available

Make sure the keys needed to move the motorcycle are available when we arrive.

If someone else is handing the motorcycle over on your behalf, let them know where the keys are and make sure they understand the collection arrangements.

If there is anything unusual about starting, moving or releasing the motorcycle, mention it when you enquire so we know what to expect.

3. Tell us about anything unusual at the collection address

Most motorcycle collections are straightforward, but access can vary considerably between properties and locations.

Tell us if the motorcycle is:

  • In a garage, shed or other enclosed space
  • Behind a locked gate
  • At the end of a narrow driveway
  • At a location with restricted parking
  • On a steep slope
  • Stored somewhere that is difficult to reach
  • At a property with shared or restricted access

A tenement close, narrow driveway or restricted parking does not necessarily prevent collection. It simply helps to know about it beforehand so the collection can be planned properly.

The same applies to the delivery address. Let us know about anything that could make access difficult at either end.

4. Make sure the collection arrangements are clear

If you are not going to be present at collection yourself, that is normally fine.

The person releasing the motorcycle should know:

  • That Ark Road Recovery is collecting it
  • Approximately when the collection is expected
  • Where the motorcycle is located
  • Where the keys are
  • Any information we need to know about moving the motorcycle

This is particularly important when the motorcycle has been bought from a private seller, is being collected from a dealer or workshop, or is being moved by someone who is not the owner.

The same applies at delivery. If someone else is receiving the motorcycle, let us know when you book.

5. Tell us about anything you want transported with the motorcycle

If there are additional items you want to travel with the motorcycle, mention them when you enquire.

This could include luggage, panniers, a top box, parts, accessories or other items associated with the motorcycle.

There is no need to assume something can or cannot be transported. Tell us what you have in mind and we can confirm the arrangements before collection.

Frequently asked questions

Does the motorcycle need to be running before collection?

No. We regularly collect motorcycles that will not start. Let us know whether the bike starts and rolls when you enquire so we can bring the appropriate loading equipment.

Do I need to be present when the motorcycle is collected?

Not normally. Someone else can release the motorcycle on your behalf as long as the collection arrangements are clear. Let us know who will be meeting us when you book.

What if the collection address has restricted access?

Tell us when you enquire. A narrow driveway, restricted parking, shared access or a motorcycle stored somewhere difficult to reach may affect how the collection is carried out.

What information should I give you when arranging transport?

We'll normally need the collection and delivery addresses, the motorcycle's make and model, whether it starts and rolls, any known faults or damage, and roughly when you need it collected.
